A letter written by Kasper (or Casper) Sonnleitner from his home in exile, Grosspold, to his wife in Austria. His wife and children had not been permitted to accompany him to Transylvania. The letter is dated 25 September 1756.

This is a translation of a letter written by Kaspar (or Caspar) Sohnleitner from Grosspold (his home-in-exile), to his wife in Austria. His wife and children had not accompanied him to Transylvania.

The letter is dated 25 September 1756. The translation was made by Veronika Laufer of Mill Valley, Marin County, California, in August of 1996.

This version of the letter is from the Baron Brukenthal’schen Bibliothek in Austria. Another version of the letter was published in a book entitled "Verbannt und vergessen - eine untergehende deutschsprachige kultur in Romanien" by Roland Girtler; Veritas Press; Linz Austria; 1992. The Girtler version of the letter was significantly shortened.

The (German) spelling and punctuation of the longer version is preserved here; it varies from modern German usage. The Girtler version made an attempt to up-date the spelling.

The chapter and verse citations that he makes in this letter do not, therefore, correspond in all cases to the

parallel text of the King James Bible used by most English-speaking Protestant sects. As an example, the text

that he refers to as "Matthew, Chapter 5, verse 15", becomes Matthew, Chapter 6, verse 24, of the King James

version.
